"Noughts and Crosses" by Malorie Blackman is a book about a girl called Persephone Hadley (but she mainly goes by the name Sephy) and her best friend, Callum McGregor.
In the book, the history of the human race is very different, already giving the book a twist. Basically instead of Europe discovering things and having technology before everyone else, Africa did so the native Africans(Crosses) were wealthier and powerful and made Europeans(Noughts) slaves. By the time the story was set slavery was abolished but the book is still set in a very ignorant and segregated environment so the Crosses can keep in power.
Sephy is a Cross and her father is a wealthy Politician that Noughts don't like. Callum's mum worked for Sephy's mum so Sephy and Callum grew up together and were very close friends but Callum's mum was eventually fired. Later on in the book Callum finds out his brother Jude and his dad are in a type of organisation that is against the leader Crosses. A bomb goes off in a shopping centre and Callum's dad is arrested for it. Callum then joins the group because he thinks his dad is innocent and he obviously wasn't happy with his arrest. But in the meantime Sephy wants to run away with Callum because they can't be together as they are of different races/classes (They realize this properly when Callum goes to a very Cross populated school where he got bullied, they realize their race differences properly and how it matters in the society they live in). Callum's dad tries to escape from prison but is killed. Years later the people in the organisation kidnap Sephy because they don't like her dad, Callum, who is in on the kidnapping, hadn't seen her in years either because she went to boarding school (to get away from everyone) so he tells the other people kidnapping her he's going to check up on her. he finds out she hates him because she sent him a letter years ago before she went away so they could meet up but he never came, he tells her that he did go but he didn't make it on time and then he says he loves her. after they had shown their love for each other he let her escape. Later on in the book Sephy's pregnant and her dad makes her chose whether to have an abortion or get Callum arrested, and killed, for rape (which he didn't do). She picked to keep the baby so Callum was killed. Before he died he told her to call the baby Callie Rose which she did.
I really enjoyed this book because its storyline is so unique and had all these little sub plots that all added together and made the big plot and the ending so much more meaningful, it added to how i perceived the characters and helped me to sympathise (like when the story behind Callums sister is told and how you can see the closeness of their relationship before she died). Also in the book there's some great twists and the whole Noughts and Crosses background is very well thought out and it adds a great deal to the book because it makes it more interesting, different and it makes the book what it is. I like how it isn't predictable because it made me want to read on. The book isn't the easiest to follow at the beginning for me but as I went on I built more understanding so for me it's still an excellent book.
My favourite character is Callum because his character seems easily related to; he had to go through all different types of emotions throughout the book like any normal human being and he was down to earth, although so was Sephy but Sephy isn't my favourite character because it isn't easy to sympathise with her all the way throughout the book. On the other hand Callum was and I think that's why I liked him more; because I felt sorry for him. But also because he's a pretty courageous person because he put his life on the line for love and for his unborn child. Also because he has a very sweet side to him like his closeness to his sister and his understanding for her problems.
I think this book is fantastically written, and although the ending is quite sad, I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see what happens next!
